Kalike is an associate organisation of Tata Trusts, works as a nodal agency for Trusts Kalike Samruddhi Upakram initiative. Kalike aims for enhancing the access and quality that is meaningful, empowering, appropriate and holistic for human development.
Kalike operates in Yadgir district of Karnataka State. In Dec 2009, Yadgir was carved out of Gulbarga as a separate district with three blocks namely Shahapur, Shorapur and Yadgir. It is one of the most backward districts in the state vis-à-vis all development indicators and the rate of literacy is 37.56% as compared to the national average of 65%. The region experiences large scale seasonal migration for employment opportunities and livelihood, which is one of the key factors contributing to high level school dropouts and poor functioning of many government institutions. School enrolment and retention rates, grade specific learning achievements among children, community participation and difficult access to quality human resources are key issues in the district.
Through direct field engagement, Kalike works towards enhancing the quality of education for most deprived communities, from Early Childhood to Skill Development, and also providing insights into systematic reform, which will have potential to inform the policy.
Currently, Kalike is working in 60 villages, covering 30 ICDS centers, 70 primary schools and 40 high schools in Yadgir district, Karnataka. The total outreach is 26,064 children. In the next five years, Kalike aims to cover 125,000 children; 2,000 youths; 8,000 farmers and 41,000 households spread across Yadgir block, Yadgir district
